In the story Ammalat-bek, the central character of the same name spends the entire literary journey struggle with a combination of internal and external forces that serve to reflect the manner by which he develops throughout the story. The synergistic coupling of morality and psychological issues plague his conscience to such an extent that they infiltrate virtually every aspect of Ammalat-bek's life, not the least of which includes his relationship with love interest Sultanetta, obligation and camaraderie toward a military associate and a foster brother who - upon declaring Ammalat-bek possessed - tries yet fails to save Ammalat-bek from moral disintegration.
